Running vs. Cycling: Which Burns More Calories?

Both are excellent cardio. Per hour, vigorous running burns more — but cycling lets you go longer. We break down the MET numbers and when each wins.

It is the classic cardio debate: running or cycling? Both build endurance, both burn serious calories, and both are easy to start. But the numbers tell an interesting story.

Calories per hour for a 70 kg person

Activity MET kcal/hour
Running, 8 km/h 8.3 ~581
Running, 12.9 km/h 11.8 ~826
Running, 16 km/h 14.5 ~1015
Cycling, leisurely 16 km/h 6.8 ~476
Cycling, moderate 22 km/h 8.0 ~560
Cycling, racing 32+ km/h 12.0 ~840

Per hour, running wins — at least at moderate-to-fast paces. A hard 30-minute run at 12.9 km/h burns about 413 kcal for a 70 kg person. The equivalent moderate 30-minute ride burns about 280 kcal.

Where cycling catches up

The raw numbers favor running, but real-world adherence favors cycling for many people:

  • Joint impact. Running delivers 2-3x body weight in ground reaction force per stride. Cycling is near-zero impact. If you are over 85 kg, returning from injury, or have knee issues, cycling lets you train more days per week.
  • Duration. A beginner can comfortably ride for 60 minutes. Few beginners can run for 60 minutes. Total weekly burn matters more than per-session intensity.
  • Commute integration. Cycling replaces a commute. Running usually adds a separate trip.

The honest answer

If you enjoy running and your joints tolerate it, running delivers the fastest calorie burn per session. If you want sustainable, long-term cardio volume — especially at higher body weight — cycling is often the smarter choice.

The best exercise is the one you will actually do consistently. Both work. Use our running and cycling calculators to model your own weight and pace.
